Artifact 1: Electronic Waste Group Presentation
|
Description: Expected SLO - Analyze political implications of information technologies and media and their role in arrangements of power. My artifact is a group presentation on Electronic waste. The presentation defines e-waste, its production and disposal, environmental effects, and, lastly, discusses possible solutions.
Reflection: This presentation was extremely informative about the procedures behind the removal of e-waste and the political implications of its distribution to other countries. The environmental effects of e-waste were also informative, and I think the most important factor is to show the effects of e-waste and discuss with others how we can help limit the production of e-waste or dispose of e-waste properly. I feel I learned a lot about e-waste from developing this presentation especially relating to how it is disposed of in other countries where the population tries to gather precious materials from the e-waste in sometimes unsafe conditions and for very little profit. I also greatly enjoyed the group discussions relating to how we, as users of technology, can be more mindful of how we dispose of e-waste and how we, as a country, can move to better ways of disposing of e-waste that maximize reuse and proper procedures for disposing of specific types of e-waste instead of just dumping or burning most of it together. |
Artifact 2: Research Paper
Social Media Impact on Identity Construction
|
Description: Expected SLO - Evaluate ways in which information technologies and media influence the lives of learners. For this SLO, my artifact is a research paper that examines research conducted on the influence of social media on developing identity in adolescents.
Reflection: It is important for educators, parents, and other professionals to research and understand the ways that adolescents interact with technology and the influence that interaction with technology can have on them as they develop their identities. Many adolescents spend a large amount of their time online on either social media, chat rooms, virtual worlds or in other interactive applications. This constant exposure has an effect on their developing personalities and identities, especially for younger individuals. My research paper looks at some of the findings and implications from recent research conducted on adolescent use of technology. Some of the research studies focused on researching adolescent’s actions and interactions online and seeing how they are able to play and experiment with their identities in ways that they cannot in the real world. This freedom influences their identity development in relation to social competence, identity consolidation, and self-experimentation and has different effects on different adolescents with various implications for their social interactions as they grow and develop into active participants in society. |
Artifact 1: 5-yr Technology Use Plan
|
Description: Expected SLO - Plan for implementing technologies/ media in an organization. My artifact is a 5 year technology plan for implementation at Doty Middle School. The plan details the adoption of computers for teacher and student use, interactive whiteboards, classroom microphones, and an LMS system for community announcements.
Reflection: This plan was very difficult to create mainly because I was not too familiar with Doty Middle School's budget or current technology plan as I worked there as a long-term sub for the semester. I think with more information the plan may have addressed more specific areas of need specifically with the actual development and implementation of a needs assessment instead of the hypothetical plan proposed. The current plan is a general proposal for upgrading various aspects of the current technology based on my personal observations and discussions with some staff members during my short time at the site. Nevertheless, the development of this plan was very informative for future situations where I may need to play an active role in developing such a plan for my future site. I am glad I was able to practice identifying areas of need, budget options, and purchase options for various technologies. I was really able to gain perspective on the importance and need of a successfully developed technology plan. |
Description: Expected SLO - Plan for implementing technologies/ media in an organization. This presentation focused on presenting information from chapters by Picciano and Frazier relating to planning and implementing technology in an organization.
Reflection: This presentation was great for learning about the necessary components in developing a technology plan particularly concerning issues of budgets, staffing, policies, and evaluation. The chapters discussed all the important components to think about when developing a technology plan such as evaluating the bottom line, thinking in systems, support services and detailing the roles personnel will plan in developing the plan. Security was also a big issue discussed in the chapters and some suggestions for protecting the hardware, software, and personal data were discussed. This presentation was a kind of prelude to the option of developing the 5-yr technology plan and so it was very informative and allowed the students to learn about and practice some key components about developing technology plans before they had to create their own if they chose to pursue that option. Although the presentation could have been delivered with more visuals and relating content, the group activity served as the culminating activity for the presentation and really highlighted the most important aspects for students to walk away with. |
Description: Expected SLO - Create interactive multimedia presentations that incorporate text, graphics, sound, and digital movies. For this artifact, I presented a research article discussing the impact of educational robotics on the attitudes and skills of students who participated in a robotics program.
Reflection: The article presentation focused on an article that examined the development in attitudes and skills of students who participated in an educational robotics program and who had to build robots for the completion of specific tasks. The article discussed positive effects in skill development and attitudes in the students that participated in the program. However, there were limitations in the participants because some students may have chosen to participate in the program due to previous experience and positive attitudes towards the program. I chose to review this article because I wanted to see how educational robotics programs help students in other subject areas. The article discussed how the ER program helps students in other areas such as math. I also liked how the article suggested at the end that educators make attempts to expand ER and computational skills into the general curriculum. I think ER programs have many possibilities and hope to see them expand in the future. |

Description: Expected SLO - Develop a plan for the design and development of an e-learning module; Manage and e-learning design and development project. This artifact is an online course I created for the teaching of the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
Reflection:The creation of an online course was a completely new and demanding experience that really allowed me to apply all that I have learned in my design and development courses. I feel I had to consider every aspect of teaching in order to create a successful and meaningful online course that would do more than just ask students to read a text. I wanted to ensure that the course incorporated various learning activities and catered to various learning styles of students. I enjoyed creating an online course because I was able to develop various lessons and interactive activities to keep students engaged and motivated to complete the course. I am sure there are many areas that are lacking in the course but I feel I learned a lot about creating an online course and I would definitely refer back to this first work and the feedback I received if I ever become tasked with creating another course. |

Description: Expected SLO - Identify learning and instructional theories and their applications to technology-enhanced instruction. Identify and analyze prominent issues in technology and media. My artifact is a group created literature review focusing on the topic of information seeking behaviors of millennials.
Reflection:The literature review focused on identifying how millennial students searched for information online. The focus was on their preferred searching tools, motivation, methods, literacy, and evaluation skills. The research studies analyzed in the literature review looked at their use of Boolean operators, databases, and the internet. Findings suggested that millennials did not have the adequate skills necessary to locate and evaluate the necessary information. This is a literature review I conducted at the very beginning of my time in the program. I was very glad to have worked with other people and learn how to conduct a literature review before completing others in future classes. The topic my group chose was also very relevant to us because we all were interested in working in a school library and one of the key aspects of working in a school library is teaching students how to search for and evaluate information for use in various learning activities or assignments. |
|
Description: Expected SLO - Skills in analyzing data, interpreting results, and evaluating research reports or articles. My artifact is a critique of an article that looks at all key aspects of a research report to critique areas of need relating to ethics, methods, participants, results, and implications.
Reflection: The concept of research, since the beginning of the program, was something that I could not fully grasp, especially the concepts behind analyzing data and producing results. The assignment in which we critique an article, was very helpful in allowing me to get a fuller understanding of research and research methods, although I may still have trouble with analyzing data. I think the most important thing I learned from the assignment is to always try to look at articles with critical eyes. Usually, I would just read articles and not question their methods or findings or think about the ethical issues behind experiments and research. This assignment helped me to narrow down key areas that I should be critically evaluating when reading research articles now and in the future. |

Description: Expected SLO - Follow technology policies to maximize students' learning and awareness around privacy, security, and safety issues. My artifact is a podcast recording of some tips for teachers about how they can talk to their students about digital citizenship and its importance.
Reflection: The podcast assignment serves as a PA announcement for the educational world to help educators learn a little about digital citizenship and to provide tips for how they can introduce the concept to their students and ensure that students know the importance of being good digital citizens. I chose to present the podcast on digital citizenship because I feel that some teachers may be reluctant to integrate technology into their classrooms and lessons because they are unsure how to develop policies and procedures for conduct. I wanted to give teachers some quick guidelines they can consider when planning for the use of technology or if they just want to pass along the information to students since students are constantly using technology inside and outside the classroom and with and without teacher guidelines. |
Description: Expected SLO - Explain theories about information and digital literacy, including the nature, architecture, and cycle of information, technology resource and tools; Articulate how formats and communication channels impact information and how information and ideas are processed and transformed using digital tools. My artifact is an infographic on libraries and their connection to the CCSS presented through the use of a visual flowchart.
Reflection: The infographic I created is a roadmap detailing the different ways that the library makes use of materials and resources to help students and teachers teach the Common core state standards. The library serves as a center of information and research guidance for students who need to learn how to effectively navigate the web to locate information for school work or personal interests. The library is also a great resource for teachers to use to help supplement their lessons relating to finding research about certain topics. The infographic details the many ways that the library is a great resource just waiting to be used by teachers and students. |

Description: Expected SLO - Learn how modern technology tools are used to design and manage Internet-based educational content for delivery to students. My artifact is an episode of a podcast series that shows my ability to use modern technology (podcast) to create educational content to share.
Reflection: My artifact is a podcast that I created in the form of a story series. The original intent of the podcast assignment was to show that we were able to access a podcast making software, record something, and upload it on the web to be shared. I chose to write a script and record episode one of a series titles "The Adventures of Erica and Natalia" featuring several actors and sound effects. I wanted to make a fun and interesting podcast that I could potentially continue to develop and use in the future. I liked how podcasts allow you to record voice and information to be shared with anyone. The possibilities of use in educational are great for teachers and students who are looking for alternative creative projects. |
|
Description: Expected SLO - earn how modern technology tools are used to design and manage Internet-based educational content for delivery to students. My artifact is a comparison of three flashcard based applications: Quizlet, Flashcards by NLO< and Flashcards by Chegg to evaluate their ease of use and effectiveness.
Reflection: For this artifact, the assignment was to choose a tool or application and compare three different producers of the same or similar tool. I chose to look at flashcard applications from an app, NKO, and Chegg. I wanted to compare and contrast their features, look, and ease of use for students. Flashcard apps are being widely used by students to help them memorize vocabulary. I have also seen teacher require students to make some form of flashcards, paper or electronic, and I myself have done that as well. I found that all three applications were extremely similar, although some did go above and beyond by allowing students to practice memorizing the cards through the introduction of various memory and typing games which serve as more interactive and engaging study tools than paper flashcards. |

Description: Expected SLO - Promote reading for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment. My artifact comes from a class that focused on literature for adolescents and which was used to waive 545. My artifact is a snapshot of the interactions between me and an assigned reading buddy high school student from Downey High School.
Reflection: Since I did not take the class ETEC 545 due to it being waived with my class ENG 480, I am including an artifact from ENG 480 that shows the completion of the standard of promoting reading for learning, personal growth and enjoyment. The reading buddy project was a collaboration with students from an English class at Downey High School. Students from CSULB would visit Downey to read and talk to the students while also sending them questions to prepare them for the reading of the week. I worked alongside a student and visited him a few times over the semester and also sent him some questions. At the end of the semester, all reading buddy groups met at the CSULB library and presented a paper bag project for their favorite short story read. |

Description: Expected SLO - Organize collections according to standard library cataloging and classification principles. My artifact is my final submission of ten items I cataloged during the course.
Reflection: I took this course my very first semester of the master’s program and I was working as a substitute teacher at the time. I feel I did not have the sufficient background at the time to really appreciate and apply my learning from this class. My final submission of cataloging ten items could have been better if I had some context in my life to apply to the course, hence I do not feel like this artifact truly reflects what I learned in the class because of the constraints of the time. However, I did learn the basics of cataloging and I am happy with some of the items in the submission that were cataloged correctly. |
